Dave Chappelle announces he’s back, disses Key & Peele “They been doing my show for the past 5 years”

Fans who were in attendance for Day 1 of the New York City leg of the annual Roots Picnic music festival in Bryant Park on Saturday [October 1], couldn’t be terribly upset by the wait time between sets, seeing how during different points of the evening they were graced to have Dave Chappelle come out to help keep the energy up.

Early in the show, the comedy king came out to warm the crowd for a couple of minutes, over which he’d dabble in current events. He then hung out until the night, making a second appearance later, when he occupied the stage with an advisory that warned that he’d only be in the fans’ company for as long as it might take for D’Angelo to be ready to perform.

“Put some respect on my name. You guys don’t know what I’ve been through. Watching Key and Peele do my show for the last five f***ing years,” Chappelle joked, as he settled in with an occasional quip, mixed in with reminder that he was simply stalling for time. After his knock on the Chappelle Show inspired Comedy Central series, he gave a minute of his time to speak on Black Lives Matter, saying, “Black lives do matter. And I shouldn’t have to say that. There’s no punchline n***a.”

Saturday’s line-up included John Mayer, D’Angelo, and The Legendary Roots themselves, among others. On Sunday the Wu-Tang Clan will close what is lined-up to be another evening of great music, with performances by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Royce Da 5’9, Lil Uzi Vert, and more.
