Rapper and actor Ice-T has come out against increased gun control legislation in the wake of the Aurora shooting at a “Dark Knight Rises” midnight showing, arguing that the “United States is based on guns.”

Speaking on London’s Channel 4 (via Mediaite), the “godfather of gangster rap” essentially argued the “guns don’t kill people, people do” route (those are not Ice’s words). “If somebody wants to kill people, they don’t need a gun to do it,” he said. “You can strap explosives on your body. They do that all the time.”

He also quoted rapper KRS-One’s infamous song “Sound of Da Police.” “Like KRS said, you’re never going to have justice on stolen land,” Ice added.

The rapper said that weapons are necessary to protect oneself from police. He also said he’d be glad to turn in his weapon after everyone else.

Ice’s comments come in the week after 12 people were killed and another 59 were injured when a young man walked into a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” and began spraying gunfire into the crowded theater.

The entertainment community has had a varied response to the incident. Jason Alexander and Andy Richter are among those who have come out in support of stricter gun laws. Heath Ledger’s father shared similar sentiments.

James Holmes was identified as the suspect in the shooting, and he has appeared in court.
